The client-consent notice

What each person confirms once about their clients' consent before uploading returns, and where to find the Terms and consent templates.

Before anyone in your firm uploads a client's return, they read the client-consent notice and confirm it. Each person does this once per firm, when they create or join it.

Steps

  1. If you're creating a firm, choose client-consent notice on Create your firm to read it, then tick the box beside it.

  2. If you're joining a firm, the Client-consent notice page shows the notice during setup. Read it and choose I understand.

The notice says what you confirm:

"By continuing, you confirm that you will only upload a tax return your firm prepared, or one taken from your firm's own tax-preparation files, if the client has signed a written consent under 26 U.S.C. §7216 that authorizes disclosing it to UNTAP LLC (Sidesheet) and its listed subprocessors, and that consent is in effect."

Good to know

  • Everyone confirms it, admins and members. It's read by the people who upload, not only by whoever set up the firm.
  • When a new version of the notice takes effect, you're shown it again and asked to acknowledge it before you continue.
  • Acknowledging records that you have read the notice, and which version.
  • The notice links consent templates you can use or adapt. In its words: "They are a convenience, not legal advice. Your firm is responsible for having the consents it needs (Terms of Service §3)." The Terms of Service has the full section.
  • Who receives uploaded returns is on the Subprocessors page.
  • This article isn't legal advice. If you're unsure what your clients need to sign, ask your own adviser.

If something goes wrong

  • "The client-consent notice changed. Please review the current version and acknowledge again." A new version took effect while you were reading. Read the one shown and choose I understand again.
  • "We could not record your acknowledgement. Try again." Nothing was saved. Choose I understand again.
