Remove a return
Remove a return with its card's menu, what each removal costs, and how it affects your firm's return count.
Remove a return when it's the wrong file, a draft, a copy, or another company's return. Removing deletes it for your whole firm and takes it out of the financials and the workbook.
Steps
-
Open the project. On the return's card, choose More actions (⋯), then Remove return.
A project's cards, with the More actions menu open on the 2024 card and Remove return in it. -
Read the confirmation, such as "Remove the 2024 return?". It says what removing costs.
The Remove the 2024 return? confirmation, saying its numbers leave the financials and it still counts toward your plan, with Cancel and Remove return. -
Choose Remove return. The card goes, and the financials and checks update without it.
The menu and the confirmation depend on how far the return has got:
| The card shows | In the menu | What removing costs |
|---|---|---|
| Uploading | Cancel upload | Nothing. It goes at once. |
| Finding the form and year, or Ready to extract | Remove file | Nothing. It goes at once, with no confirmation. |
| Extracting | Stop and remove | Nothing. "It's removed and won't count toward your plan." |
| Couldn't extract | The Remove button (the bin), no menu | Nothing. "It didn't finish extracting, so it hasn't counted toward your plan." |
| Reviewed, Not reviewed yet or warnings | Remove return | "Its numbers leave the financials and the workbook. It still counts toward your plan, since it was extracted." |
A file we couldn't upload or use has its own Remove button (the bin) on its card instead of a menu.
Good to know
- Removing can't be undone. To get the return back, upload the file again.
- Checks that compare the removed year with the year before or after run again.
- A return removed after extraction finished stays counted. The work was done, so there's no refund. Uploading the same file again and extracting it counts as a new return. See How returns are counted.
- Anyone in your firm can remove a return. If your firm's access has ended, the More actions menu isn't shown.
- Removing a return can clear a warning it caused, such as two returns for the same year. See Warnings when you add returns.
- When every file is removed, the project shows its drop zone again.
If something goes wrong
- "Something went wrong. Try again." The return is still in the project. Choose Remove return again.
- "We couldn't find that return." It may already have been removed. Reload the page.
