Warnings when you add returns
The project's warnings banner for a different company, the same year twice and a missing year, how to settle each, and why none stops you extracting.
As each file is identified, we compare it with the project's other returns. If something looks like a mistake, an amber banner above the cards counts it, such as "1 thing to check across these returns". Warnings never stop you extracting.
Steps
-
Choose Show on the banner. Each warning has its own row: what kind it is, a sentence saying what we found, and Review.
The project's warnings banner opened with Show, with one Doesn't carry over row and its Review button. -
Choose Review. A window shows what the warning is about and the ways to settle it.
-
Settle it, and the row leaves the banner. Close leaves it there for later.
| Warning | Example | Ways to settle it |
|---|---|---|
| Different company | "The 2020 return may be for a different company: Anytown HVAC LLC, and its EIN doesn't match the other returns (Anytown Heating & Air, Inc.)." | Same company, such as a company that was renamed. Once extracted, Correct the EIN by typing the EIN page 1 prints. Or remove the return. |
| Same year twice | "2021 was added twice and both are extracted. The financials use Anytown 2021 1120-S.pdf." | Use this one on the file the financials should use, Remove a draft or copy, or Keep both when one amends the other. |
| Missing year | "There's no 2022 return, so the financials skip from 2021 to 2023." | Add 2022 opens your files. If the company didn't file that year, choose There's no 2022 return. |
| Doesn't carry over | "2 Schedule L lines don't carry over: 2024's opening balances don't match 2023's closing ones." | Found after extraction. See Reconciled, Unreconciled and Not verifiable. |
The years, names and counts in a warning come from your returns.
Good to know
- The banner shows only when something is in it, and it always starts closed. Hide closes it again.
- The Extract bar counts what the new files raise, such as "1 warning. You can still extract." Warnings never turn Extract off.
- A card that shares its year with another file says "Same year as another file" in amber.
- When the returns name more than one company, each card shows its company under the year.
- Before you extract, a same-year review shows each file's name, form, year and company instead of its pages.
- Company names are compared ignoring capitals, punctuation and extra spaces, so Acme, Inc. and ACME Inc count as one company.
- Only files we've identified count. A file that couldn't upload or couldn't be identified raises no warning.
- Removing the file a warning points at also clears it. See Remove a return.
- If your firm's access has ended, Review still shows the warning, without the ways to settle it.
