Create a project and add returns
Make one project per company and drop in up to 10 return PDFs, each a card identified by form and year as it uploads.
A project holds one company's tax returns. Create one for each company you're valuing, then add its return PDFs.
Steps
-
On Projects, choose New project.
-
Enter a Project name, such as the company's name, and choose Create project.
The New project window, with the Project name field and Create project. -
The project's page opens, empty. Under Returns, drop the PDFs on "Drop this company's tax returns here", or choose Choose files. On a tablet, choose Choose files.
An empty project, with the drop zone and Choose files. -
Each file becomes a card as soon as it's picked, and the line under the project's name counts it, such as "4 files added". It uploads, then shows "Finding the form and year". This usually takes a few seconds.
-
When a file is identified, its card shows the year and form, such as 2024 and Form 1065, and "Ready to extract".
-
Add as many years as you have, up to 10 returns. To add more, choose Add more returns at the top of the page. A bar under the cards says how many are ready and how many returns Extract will read, such as Extract 3 returns.
Three cards identified as Form 1065 for 2024, 2023 and 2022, with 3 returns ready to extract and Extract 3 returns.
The drop zone shows only while a project is empty. Once it has a file, use Add more returns, now or later.
Good to know
- We read PDFs of Form 1120, 1120-S or 1065, tax years 2015 and later.
- "A project holds up to 10 returns." Files are up to 10 MB and 300 pages each.
- Upload each return as its own file.
- Adding files never starts an extraction or counts toward your returns. You choose Extract when every file is right.
- If the returns name more than one company, each card also shows its company name, and the project's warnings banner says so. You can still extract. See Warnings when you add returns.
- You can leave once the files finish uploading. Identifying keeps going without you.
- Before your firm has a project, Projects also shows Take the tour. It walks you through an invented company's finished project in seven short steps, and you can look through and export it. Nothing there is saved or counts toward your returns.
- Once your firm has projects, Projects offers the tour above them until you choose Take the tour or No thanks.
If something goes wrong
A card we can't use says why in red, with Remove and, when another try can help, Try again. See When a file can't be used.
- "We support tax years 2015 and later." Remove returns from before 2015.
- "This file holds more than one return. Upload each one as its own file." Split the PDF, then upload each return.
Next, extract the returns.
