Extract the returns

Extract reads each return and builds the financials in a few minutes, and you can leave the page while it works.

Extract reads every line we need from each return, checks that the numbers add up, and builds the financials. Do it once every file in the project is identified.

Steps

  1. On the project's page, check that every card shows its year and form.

  2. In the bar under the cards, choose the Extract button. It says how many returns it will read, such as Extract 3 returns.

  3. Each card shows its progress: "Finding pages", "Reading values", then "Checking totals", with a percent, a count of pages such as "9 of 23", and the time left, such as "12 min left".

  4. This takes a few minutes. You can leave the page; we'll keep going.

  5. When a return is ready, its card shows Review, and its year fills in on the Financials card. You can start reviewing as soon as the first return is ready.

Good to know

  • A return counts toward your firm's returns only when its extraction finishes. See How returns are counted.
  • Extract is off until every file is identified. Its reason shows in the bar, such as "Replace or remove the 1 file we can't use to extract."
  • If something about the new files looks like a mistake, the bar says so, such as "1 warning. You can still extract." See Warnings when you add returns.
  • The page updates by itself. You don't need to reload it.
  • Files you add later bring the bar back, for the new files only.

If something goes wrong

  • Couldn't extract The card shows Try again (the arrow) and Remove (the bin). Try again starts over from the file you already uploaded.
  • Couldn't extract after 3 tries Each return gets three tries: the first, then Try again twice. After that, the card says "Remove it, or contact support". Remove it, or email us at hello@sidesheet.co.
  • "We've paused extracting for your firm while we check something. Contact support at hello@sidesheet.co." Returns already extracting still finish. Email us and we'll look into it.

Next, review a return.
